Abstract

Transcribed or translated, the tale suffers considerable damage, but through this distortion it increases tenfold its audience and the effectiveness of its social functions which are entertainment and moralization, among others. How can we explain this functional efficiency and creative choice? By what enunciative devices did Jean Kantchébé dramatize this popular tale from his region and what implications does this adaptation induce? This article aims to analyze the functional and aesthetic issues of the adaptation of Dambé, the king's daughter, a traditional tale, to dramaturgy. To reach the conclusion that the dramatized tale is functionally more effective and aesthetically more enjoyable than the marvelous tale, we linked our analytical approach to the corpus to the work of Genette on transtextuality to highlight the hypertextual transformations of the dramatic text which would make more pragmatic and effective staging of this popular tale.
