Abstract

The Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) is an African sporting event that brings together several linguistic areas – French-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, English-speaking. The 34th edition, held in Côte d'Ivoire from 12 January to 11 February 2023, saw a phenomenal display of linguistic creativity and adaptation in all areas of discourse. This reflection aims to explore the specific lexicon used by both the Ivorian population and foreigners (who copy, borrow and imitate Ivorian speech). Indeed, the words used to express enthusiasm mobilise a local cultural and linguistic dynamism based on the socio-historical practices of the host country. Media discourse – television, Facebook, WhatsApp, advertising, etc. – offers a lexicology that highlights the terms characteristic of this circumstantial communication and establishes popular Ivorian French as a label of sustainable linguistic development in the French-speaking world. The study is based on the methodological tools of praxematics.
