Abstract

The journey is a real school of the eye. André Gide knows how to look at the natives as well as the colonists, the administrators as well as the concessionary companies. He also knows how to observe the world of the natives that surrounds him, by proposi ng a descriptive, subjective writing, tinged with realism. This writing of otherness is based on the narrative elements of the writing of the self. The traveller writer consequently stages significant occurrences that participate in this representation of the indigenous world.
