The sociopragmatic analysis of circumstantial Mbere names

Abstract

This paper deals with Mbere onomastics. It provides an analysis of Mbere naming system with a particular reference to circumstantial names. It comes out from discussions that nine (9) circumstances account for Mbere naming system. These circumstances imply order of birth names, place of birth names, family conflicts and peace names, death situation names, health and social conditions, woman fertility or sterility names, days of birth names, names related to weather at birth, social events names.
